An analysis of the Universidad de Navara, titled “Portugal, a strong bet on renewables to reduce it’s energy dependency” shows that in the last decade has become a prominent leader in renewable energy transition in Europe.
Being among the highest external energy dependent European country in 2010 (about 80%) Portugal succeeded to boost the renewable energy developments and to achieve a strong progress based on the “latecomer advantage” theory.
As per the latest data the Iberian based country showed that 63.64% of electrity production at the beginning of 2022 came from renewable sources, as follows: 31.26% wind, 17.78% hydro, 6.99% bioenergy, 3.80% solar and 3.80% pumping. The remaining 35.36% accounts on imported fossil fuels, as for 5.09% of electricity production was used fossil and 31.27% from natural gas.
